The Digitalisation of Education
Monday, July 03, 2017
The on-going digital revolution will transform the world of education. Europe’s children, according to the European Commission, start using electronic devices from the age of 7. Nonetheless, it cannot be taken for granted that early use of digital applications will bring about digital competencies. As digital skills will play an important role in the future labour market, the EU has announced that it will invest in the digitalisation of education in order to maintain its competitiveness.
While many schools in Europe are still struggling to digitalise their procedures, Estonia’s schools have been in the digital age since the 1990s. Arguably the most astonishing achievement is the far-reaching e-School system that established an unprecedented partnership between parents, students, and teachers. Parents have online access to their children’s school activity data, including grades and attendance records. Students can check their progress online. Teachers, using the same technology, can send notes to parents and students.
